So is the MLB promoting binge drinking or trying to curb it with this 9-9-9 promotion? Some thoughts, some concerns, and a conclusion.
Looking at the surface, it seems promoting an overpriced special where the goal is to eat 9 hot dogs and drink 9 beers in 9 innings is promoting irresponsible drinking. This meme-y trend has been around for a couple of years, but the MLB is desperately trying to attach itself to this meme like a dying corpse straining for that last breath. The problem is the Gen-Z and Gen-Alpha dude bro that this is trying to pull in will see right through this.
The MLB version includes nine 1/2-size hot dogs and nine 4-ounce beers. So it’s the 9-9-9 challenge in name only as the original challenge is for 9 full size beers and hot dogs. Does this mean the MLB is trying to stop a trend of drinking 9 full beers at a game? Sounds like a good marketing angle.
The dude bros will be calling bullshit on this from outside the park, down the street, at the trendy pop Korean BBQ/tequila bar/boba salon they are normally at. “Dude, bro, these aren’t even real beers, bro. What are these, beers for ants, bro? Can’t fool me, bro.”
So then why are they doing it? I’m just going to call this what it likely is. A misguided marketing attempt to remain relevant. Glomming onto a trend from a world that passed the league by right about the time they cancelled the World Series due to greed.
9-9-9 is stupid, and the MLB is stupid. Don’t fall for their stupidity. Have fun.
